Electric Hair Dryer, about 1920
Though convenient, many new electrical appliances were also dangerous.

Hair dryers were first mass-marketed in the 1920s and were continuously redesigned. Nonetheless, they were responsible for hundreds of deaths by electrocution in the mid-twentieth century. As a result, the Consumer Product Safety Commission established guidelines for their safe manufacture in the 1970s.
