A Communications Revolution

Despite the advance in communication brought by the telegraph, which uses electrical signals transmitted over a wire, few in the 1880s could envision a device that would permit distance users to conduct a conversation heard directly. The electric telephone did that. It rapidly became indispensable to businesses, government, and households. It also provided women jobs outside the home as operators.
