Daniel Webster David
b 1862 / d 1913
Born into slavery, Davis became a teacher, minister, historian, and poet. His teaching career spanned three decades in Virginia, West Virginia, and the Carolinas. In 1896, he was ordained and served as a Baptist minister in South Richmond until his death. In such poetry as "Weh Down Souf" and often in his sermons, David united dialect with history and the gospels to champion racial justice.
