The Lost Cause

Many white southerners sought reaffirmation that the Confederate stand was an episode enacted nobly and a past to be revered. They created the "cult of the Lost Cause," a celebration of the Confederacy devoid of criticism and conducted with enthusiasm to reinforce the existing social order and even inspire. It survives today. The Historical Society building began as "Battle Abbey," a creation of this movement.
