Surrender at Appomattox Court House
Relentlessly pursued by the federal army, Gen. Robert E. Lee moved his diminishing army westward in an attempt to join Confederate forces in North Carolina. By April 8 -- after a week of running battles -- the Army of Northern Virginia found itself surrounded, outnumbered, and short of supplies. The next day, Lee surrendered his army to Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant.
