With seven rounds loaded through the stock, lever-action Spencer repeating firearms allowed a soldier to hurl seven times as much lead across the battlefield as a muzzle-loading opponent. The Spencer was widely issued to Union cavalrymen, but cost prohibited its wide use among the infantry. |
