Smoothbore Firearms

A soldier with a smoothbore musket could fire a lead ball three times each minute but was only accurate to 100 yards. To improve close-range effectiveness, soldiers fired "buck and ball" that included, for each round, a standard musket ball plus three lead buckshot pellets. Although the bayonet was responsible for relatively few casualties, it continued to be an important psychological weapon.
