Shattered Bones, 1863-1864
Civil War projectiles caused traumatic damage to flesh and bone.
A soft, conical, hollow-based Minie ball flattened and deformed on impact. It did not simply break bones and pierce tissue, it shattered and shredded them. If the ragged, tumbling bullet had enough force to cleave completely through the body it tore out an exit wound several times the size of the entrance wound.
