Why Did the Civil War Happen?
In 1860, newly elected President Abraham Lincoln pledged to ban slavery in the territories, which would weaken the power of slaveholding states in Congress. Seven Deep South states seceded. After Confederates in Charleston, South Carolina, fired upon a US Army garrison in Fort Sumter, Lincoln called o the loyal states for militia to suppress the rebellion. Virginia chose instead to secede. |
