Anthony Burns
d 31 May 1834 / d 17 July 1862
After escaping slavery in Stafford County, Buns settled in Boston. In 1854 he was tracked down by Charles Suttle, who claimed his return under the Fugitive Slave Law. The trial captured national attention, and Burns was shipped back to Virginia. Abolitionists later purchased his freedom. The government proved it could enforce the Fugitive Slave Law but not without controversy.
