John Randolph of Roanoke
born Hopewell; resided Charlotte County
b 2 June 1773 / d 24 May 1833
A slight man made high-voiced by illness, Randolph was eccentric and feared in Congress. There -- wearing riding boots with whip in hand -- he would browbeat opponents with his brilliant wit. Randolph advocated restricting the role of the federal government and promoting the agrarian lifestyle, which he pursued at "Roanoke," his own slave-sustained plantation in Southside Virginia.

Acquaintances said this image presented "an accurate and by no means caricatured or exaggerated representation of Randolph's singular personal appearance."
