Sacagawea
Present-day Idaho and North Dakota
b. about 1788 / d. 20 December 1812

Sacagawea as pregnant with her first child when the Corps of Discovery arrived near the Hidatsa Indian villages in the winter of 1804-1805. The Corps hired her and her husband, a Quebec trapper, as interpreters and guides. Before leaving, she gave birth to a son. Sacagawea was instrumental in the Corps' dealings with the Shoshone Indians and everywhere signaled the peaceful intent of the expedition.
