Cussing Cousins
Thomas Jefferson and John Marshall -- distant cousins -- held radically different philosophies. Jefferson, a visionary, believed that the common man could best govern himself with a weak national government. Marshall thwarted Jefferson's presidency, and as chief justice of the Supreme Court, he established its authority to decide the constitutionality of laws and expanded federal powers beyond those outlined in the Constitution.
