The Struggles for Religious Freedom
The Church of England (Anglican Church) was the state-mandated religion in Virginia and funded by public taxes. Baptists and others were ill-treated. The church opposed Thomas Jefferson's bill to change the law in 1779, but a Virginia Statute for Establishing Religious Freedom was ultimately passed in 1786. Eloquently written, it influenced the 1st Amendment to the Constitution.
