Virginia's Wartime Leader
In April 1775, when the royal governor seized gunpowder stored for the public defense, Patrick Henry led the Hanover County militia to Williamsburg to demand its return. He briefly commanded all of the colony's forces. He served as Virginia's first post-colonial governor from 1776 to 1779 and in the House of Delegates until 1784.
