The Revolutionary War in Virginia
Virginia played a critical role in the winning of independence when the British army was trapped and defeated at Yorktown.
In 1775, Lord Dunmore, the royal governor, was repulsed at Great Bridge and forced to set up a government-in-exile in Loyalist Norfolk. In 1781, British forces attempting to support Lord Cornwallis's army in North Carolina were engaged at the supply center of Petersburg. A combined French and American army under George Washington pinned down and besieged that same army at Yorktown, where Cornwallis surrendered.
