"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal..."
-- Thomas Jefferson, July 4, 1775

Jefferson was not known to be a fiery speaker, but he was known for his skill as a writer when he was selected to join the Committee of Five that would draft the Declaration of Independence. He worked for two-and-a-half weeks and created a document that justified American independence and outlined a vision of equality and justice that remains the American ideal.
