Archaeological Evidence
The elite left homes, portraits, furniture, silver, and letters for historians to study. The enslaved, poor farmers, and the craftsmen left much less evidence behind. Nevertheless, manuscripts left by wealthy landowners listing the names of their tenants and the archaeological excavation at home sites, trash pits, and outhouses reveal a great deal about the the lives of the "forgotten" families.
