Knights of the Golden Horseshoe
By 1710 there was growing pressure to enlarge the Virginia colony. In 1716, Lt. Gov. Alexander Spotswood led an expedition of about fifty en, including four Meherrin Indians, over the Blue Ridge Mountains and claimed the Shenandoah Valley in the name of George I. The party took their name from the horseshoe-shaped pins made of gold given by Spotswood to the officers.
