Women in the Backcountry
In the late 1700s, men looking for new opportunities relocated their families to new land. Women accompanied them reluctantly. The loss of kinship networks was traumatic for wives and daughters, as was reestablishing a family home in unknown territory. Small pieces of jewelry easily carried west by their owners could be important reminders of loved ones left behind.
