From Servitude to Slavery
Indentured servants worked from dawn until dusk, six days a week. Their servitude was more like slavery than anything existing in England. By 1700, chattel slavery was replacing indentured servitude. Slaves were often more easily controlled, were bonded for life, and children born to enslaved women were themselves enslaved. Even religious conversion did not change the status of enslaved Africans. |
