Populating Early Virginia
Lured from England by the promise of wealth from raising tobacco and the eventual ownership of land, 50,000 indentured servants traveled to Virginia in the mid-1600s. Comprising three-quarters of all new arrivals, each would work four to seven years in exchange for transportation. After Bacon's Rebellion in 1676, a more controllable workforce of enslaved Africans was put into place.
