Opechancanough's Dilemma
Paramount Chief Powhatan initially tried to ally himself with the English settlers. During the winter of 1609-1610, the colonists raided Indian food supplies and Powhatan ordered an attack. War raged until 1614, when Pocahontas married John Rolfe. Meanwhile the English population grew, their settlements encroached on Indian lands, and they formed alliances with other Indian nations. When Powhatan died in 1618, his younger brother Opechancanough decided that something needed to be done about the English. |
