John White
b about 1540 / d about 1593
English artist John White was a member of the failed permanent settlement on Roanoke Island. As part of Sir Walter Raleigh's plan to colonize "Virginia," White produced numerous watercolors documenting the plants, animals, and inhabitants of the mid-Atlantic coast. Designed to illustrate the New World for European audiences, his work brought Algonquian society to life for English viewers.
