All America was Virginia

The charter granted to the Virginia Company of London in 1606 was vague as to how far Virginia extended westward. To the settlers, Virginia extended as far as one could image. In 1728, William Byrd II wrote, "that part of the northern American continent now under the domination of the king of Great Britain went at first under the general name of Virginia."

Throughout the colonial era, Europeans knew little about the westward extent of North America.
