Peyton Randolph (c. 1721-1775) by John Wollaston. Speaker of the House of Burgesses from 1766 to 1775, Randolph was president of the First Continental Congress in 1774 and 1775 and was called "the father of the country." He did not serve in the Second Continental Congress, ceding his place to John Hancock of Massachusetts and his nickname to fellow Virginian George Washington.
