Seal of Sir Walter Raleigh (c. 1552-1618) as governor of Virginia. He never came to North America, but the second expedition he sent was intended to establish a self-sustaining colony. Led by Lieutenant Governor John White, it consisted of 117 colonists, including nine children and seventeen women. On August 18, 1587, White's daughter Ellinor White Dare gave birth to Virginia Dare -- the first English child born in North America -- named for the place and its patroness. |
