Avoid Foreign Entanglements and Permanent Alliances
Property Protected a la Francoise, 1798
After engaging the French and the British in two wars and during his presidency, George Washington warned about foreign entanglements -- such as the "XYZ affair" that developed soon after his retirement.
As recorded in his satirical cartoon, French officials (identified only as "X, Y, and Z") demanded bribes in return for a peace agreement. The United States is represented as the woman to the left of center. |
