Alliance with France?

Execution of Louis XVI on 21st of January, 1793, 1793
Jefferson and his followers, known as "Republicans," sought an alliance with France -- not with England -- even during the excesses of the French Revolution.
Consequently, they were nicknamed Jacobins, after the most radical of the Parisian political groups.
The Jacobins instituted the Terror of 1793-1794, and the guillotine, used to executive thousands of people -- including the king and queen -- became a memorable symbol.
