Lt. Col. Alexander Hamilton's field epaulets and sword knot, late 18th century

During the war Hamilton used this sword knot to secure his sword to his wrist and wore this pair of epaulets -- designing his rank as lieutenant colonel.
Although thousands of the letters and scores of the essays he penned during his lifetime still exist in private collections, libraries, and archives, relatively few personal items used by Hamilton survive.
