"Without my consent..."
Letter from George Washington to Rev. Bryan Fairfax, 1774

"[T]he Parliament of Great Britain hath no more Right to put their hands into my Pocket, without my consent, than I have to put my hands in your's, for money."

Thus wrote George Washington (1732-1799) on the far-right page of this letter. Here he passionately explains his opposition to Parliament's anti-American policies -- including taxation and its response to the Boston Tea Party (1773). Three days earlier, he and George Mason (1825-1792) drafted the Fairfax Resolves -- a petition demanding colonial representation in Parliament and control over taxation, judicial powers, and commerce.
