Bust of Charles Broadway Rouss, 1895
M. Buxbaum

Before the Civil War, Charles Broadway Rouss (1836-1902) was the most successful storekeeper in Winchester, Virginia. After serving in the 12th Virginia Infantry, he opened a dry good store in New York City.
He pledged $100,000 -- half of the amount required -- for the construction of the Battle Abbey. Rouss did not live long enough to see the project completed.
