A Message for the Future
Members of the Confederate Memorial Association (CMA) placed a copper time capsule into a carved niche in the cornerstone of the building in 1912.
The box was stuffed with more than 100 items, including newspaper, postcards, Confederate army documents and currency, and materials relating to the creation of the memorial.
Through the selection of the items in the box, CMA officials intended to honor both the Confederacy, by including relics from the war, and the City of Richmond and its place as the former capital of the Confederacy.
