Postcard of the Soldiers' Home, about 1910.
In the 1880s, the original 1850s farmhouse of the Robinson family (center) became the core of a residential complex for poor and infirm Confederate veterans. Known as R.E. Lee Camp No. 1, it operated until 1941. In 1910 part of its grounds would serve as the site of the Confederate Memorial Institute (Battle Abbey).
