When the Civil War erupted in the spring of 1861, there were nearly 3.4 million horses in the northern states and 1.7 million in the Confederate states. The border states of Missouri and Kentucky had an additional 800,000 horses. More than one million horses and mules were killed during the Civil War. A monument to their sacrifice, The War Horse, stands in front of the Virginia Historical Society.
