The Crew
Much like the rifles used by infantrymen, most Civil War artillery was loaded through the muzzle, but an eight-man team operated each gun. Most prominent in the mural is the artillerist wielding the sponge-rammer. His role was to extinguish embers that may remain in the barrel between firing and to ram powder charge and shot down the barrel.
