James Ewell Brown Stuart:
Stuart grew his trademark beard after graduating from West Point in 1854. It was said that he was the "only man... [a] beard improved." He resigned from the US army in May 1861, and quickly became a hero to Confederates and a terror to Union forces. He served as the chief of cavalry for the Army of Northern Virginia until he was mortally wounded in May 1864. He is buried at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond.

George Washington Custis Lee, James Ewell Brown Stuart, and Stephen Dill Lee, about 1854.
