Cavalry (Autumn) Mural
With the oranges and yellows of autumn, this mural depicts Confederate cavalry commander James Ewell Brown Stuart waving his signature plumed hat in the air and leading his cavalry -- armed with a variety of sabers, carbines, and pistols -- in a mounted charge. Of all the branches of service, the cavalry offered the greatest chance for glory and adventure -- a reputation fueled, in large part, by its leaders. This image of Stuart encouraging his troopers over a hill is suggestive of the late part of the war, during which the Confederacy suffered numerous defeats but determined to continued what was becoming an uphill struggle.
