In addition to reconnaissance, horse soldiers served as a mobile strike force that often fought on foot. Although one solider in four was detailed to hold the horses, each trooper armed with a breech-loading carbine that remained on the front line could deliver as much firepower as two infantrymen. Headlong charges -- as shown here -- were dramatic but rare during a war dominated by long range firearms
