The Generals and Their Horses
Among the officers shown here, Lee, Johnston, and Beauregard held the highest rank as full generals. Ewell, Longstreet, Jackson, Hampton, Hill, and Hood were among only eighteen Confederate lieutenant generals. Gordon, Fitzhugh Lee, Pickett, and Stuart were major generals. All but Hampton and Gordon were educated at West Point.
The horses of famous generals became almost as well known as their riders. They quickly carried them to where they were needed on the battlefield -- especially when an officer's appearance could encourage the men.
