Charles Hoffbauer
Hoffbauer was the artist commissioned by Ellyson to produce the Memorial Military Murals.
Hoffbauer was born in Paris in 1875 and was a well-known artist even before his commission from the Confederate Memorial Association in 1913. After the outbreak of World War I, Hoffbauer left the mural project and enlisted as a private in the 274th Infantry Regiment. He returned to Richmond in May 1919 to complete the murals, which were unveiled in January 1921.
