The Influencer

From the late '60s to the '80s, Oliphant became only more popular, cementing his position as the most widely read editorial cartoonist around. In 1975, he moved to the heart of American politics when he joined the staff of the Washington Star.

In 1981, when the Star folded, Oliphant became the first editorial cartoonist of the century to become independent, choosing to distribute his cartoons only through syndication (in 1980, he had moved to the United Press Syndicate). His ability to make this choice shows his unmatched influence on the newspaper-reading public. As an artist, it gave him full authority over his cartoons' content. It also enabled his work in sculpture and other media to flourish.

The year 1988 was a turning point in Oliphant's career: he met gallerist Susan Conway, who began representing his work. In 1990, she arranged the first of several high-profile exhibitions of his work. The two married in 1996.
