Unishade and Duoshade

Oliphant had just a few hours to conceptualize, execute, and deliver each day's drawing. Like many commercial artists, he used special paper to add shadows quickly. The Craftint papers were treated with lines that were revealed when brushed with one (Unishade) or two (Duoshade) liquid chemicals, producing an effect much like pen-and-ink crosshatching. When Oliphant gave up Duoshade in the early '80s, his peers followed, and the purer pen-and-ink of his later work became a standard that many other editorial cartoonists imitated. Craftint discontinued the products in 2009, after Photoshop made them obsolete.
