George Bush (throwing horseshoes)
1989
Bronze

Soon after taking office, President George H.W. Bush added a horseshoe pitch beside the White House swimming pool where he was known to invite world leaders to try the sport. Instead of a commanding equestrian statue, Oliphant's sculpture reduces Bush's long, lean, and fit frame to skeletal proportions, which marvelously reconcile into a single dynamic motion expressing the toss of a horseshoe. Oliphant once said he had no idea for the sculpture until he actually met Bush and then "a Giacometti form at once suggested itself."
