Philip H. Sheridan stood just behind U.S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman in the pantheon of Union military commanders. This postcard, mailed in 1911, celebrates Sheridan's victory at Cedar Creek, Virginia, on October 19, 1864, with four lines from a poem that invokes Union:

And when their statues are placed on high,
Under the Dome of the Union sky,
The American soldiers' Temple of Fame,
There with the glorious General's name.
