Path to the Pacific
Building the Transcontinental Railroad

On May 10th, 1869, the Transcontinental Railroad, or "Pacific Railroad" was completed with the driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory, Utah. Joining the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, the railroad improved trade and communication across the continent and allowed travelers to make what was previously a six-month journey in six days. This summer we join the celebrations across the state to mark the 150th anniversary of these monumental achievement of engineering and human effort.
