Norwegian Christmas at Union Station
About the Ornaments
Every year, the Norwegian Christmas tree at Union Station has a special theme, and this year's theme is the Ocean. All of Earth's oceans are connected, and what affects one of them affects them all.
To underline our theme, the tree has been decorated with hundreds of ornaments that celebrate life under the sea.
The Norwegian Embassy commissioned Norwegian artist Liliane Blom to design and create the ornaments from recycled materials, including:
* 100 neckties stuffed with old plastic bags turned into shrimp
* 110 plastic bottles turned into jellyfish
* 450 CDs turned into fish
The CD fish were made with many helping hands. More than 300 children from Gaithersburg Elementary School, Savoy Elementary and College Park Nursery School participated in the project. 100 more CDs were created by participants at the Visarts workshop in Rockville.
