In memory of
Lieutenant John G. Talbot, USN
Peter Francis, Quar.Master.
John Andrews, Coxswain.
James Muir, Capt. of Hold.
All of the USS Saginaw.
Who were drowned
Dec. 19, 1870 while attempting to land
on the island of Kauai, in the north Pacific
Ocean, after a boat voyage of fifteen hundred
miles, voluntarily undertaken in search of
aid for their wrecked shipmates on ocean island.
To commemorate their adventurous voyage,
in admiration of their heroism,
and to keep alive the remembrance
of their noble and generous devotion,
this table is erected by their shipmates
and by officers of the US Navy.
"Greater love hath no man than this,
that a man lay down his life for his friends."
