Union Damage Earthquake Damage & Repair Information

(1) Damage
5.8 Earthquake struck August 23, 2011.
Epicenter 80mi from Washington, DC.
Union Station felt the effects; broken glass .windows, plaster ceilings cracked and dismantled.

(2) Investigation
Team of experts engaged:
- Historic Architects -- John Bowie Assoc.
- Structural Engineer -- McMullan & Associates
- Plaster Artisans -- Hayles & Howe, Inc.
- Scaffold Engineer -- Universal Building Supply, Inc. (UBS)

Scaffolding required to investigate and repair entire Main Hall ceiling.
Scaffolding required to investigate and repair the portion of Shopping Concourse where most damage incurred.
Scaffolding will allow experts to survey the damage and determine necessary cosmetic and structural repairs.

(3) Repair:
Plaster repair in Shopping Concourse expected to be complete Late May 2012
- Concourse repair of 1/6 (scaffold portion) of entire ceiling to include; plaster repair, fortify structure where necessary, replace broken skylights, clean and paint.
Plaster repair in Main Hall will being April 1 expected to be complete Early February 2013.
- Entire Main Hall ceiling repairs include; plaster repair, fortify structure where necessary, clean and paint, gold leaf touch-up.
