General McClellan's Binoculars
Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan, who served as general-in-chief of the Army early in the Civil War, used these binoculars. Because of their compact size and wider field of vision, binoculars, known also as field glasses, had largely replaced spyglasses for use in the field. While they were not new technology, by the mid-19th century they had become inexpensive enough to be carried by officers and signal corps personnel.
